“REFLECTION: BASUREROS” (Andrea M.L. Saarenas)

The story “basureros” is a very heart-warming documentation of how three young kids, who are very unfortunate changed a man who despises their kind before. The mentality of the ‘documentator’ was that, these “basureros” are also stealers and they cannot be trusted.

But that afternoon, when he saw these pitiful children busily searching the garbage across the street and finding out that they once have parents (but lost them due to unfortunate sickness), his heart was filled with pity and admiration for the strength of these children. He was amazed on how proud and prideful they are by not begging to anyone nor accepting gifts. They seem to have faith that they can carry on feeding themselves and earning money that will help aid their paralyzed father.

I myself am touched by their humility and determination to continue doing good. These kinds of children should be taken care of by the government. I once wished and told myself that I wanted to join in helping orphanages but because I’m also unfortunate, it didn’t come true. Now I realized that my misfortunes are nothing compared to these children. At such a young age, these innocent kids have suffered more than an adult. It’s really sad that this story really happens to most of us Filipinos in this decade, and that until now, no honest politician had lessen our poverty. This societal problem should be solved before hundreds of children grow up to be desperate like turning into the bad side of society (Stealers, snatchers, and killers).
